UPSC CSE Main Examination: Compulsory & Optional Subjects

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted in three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Personality Test (Interview). Among these stages, the Main Examination (Mains) is considered the most important because its marks directly contribute to the final merit ranking of candidates.

The UPSC CSE Main Examination is designed to evaluate a candidate's intellectual depth, analytical ability, critical thinking, writing skills, and overall suitability for a career in public administration. Unlike the Preliminary Examination, which consists of objective-type questions, the Main Examination is entirely descriptive in nature and requires candidates to write detailed answers within a limited time.
